Tata Consultancy Services
Tata Consultancy Services

Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) would be the place I'd be in if I'm unable to bell CAT this year, or if I don't appear for any walk-ins after my graduation or even if I do, I don't get selected. No, this isn't a pessimistic view, its just a worst case analysis sorta thing. I realize now, I'm in love with TCS.
Ever since I got selected when TCS was first to visit our college for campus recruitment, and got to know about the company before, through the Pre-Placement talk and later at the 'Sparsh' meet at TCS - Mumbai, I was overwhelmed by this IT global giant. The Q1 results TCS just came up with are pretty decent. The recent news about TCS axing about 100 non-performers seems justified too. But I received different opinions when I told this news to my friends who are all set to join TCS next year.
I told them, that TCS just axed about 1000 non-performers that came as a result of the EVA scheme that TCS started using for the appraisal system an year and a half back. I received different opinions like, "you shouldn't tell such news to us. It feels disappointing that it kicked employees". No, it didn't kick employees, it kicked those who were non-performers and that's absolutely fine. Some days back I kind of predicted this thing (in a post) when I went through the Jack Welch autobiography, that TCS' condition is much like the GE's of 1980s when it comes to mass recruitment that TCS is on these days. Who knows they have one Jack Welch in who starts expelling non-performers? And it’s perfectly fine, the more you add up to the organization, the more you bring to your organization, the more you are rewarded. That's what EVA is, though I still need to read what that plan formally is. But I didn't like my friends telling me, such news is disappointing. No, its a sign, TCS is changing and such change is necessary. No industry likes non-performers. Non-performers should just not stay.
The other important thing I personally feel is, every new entrant should know the company in and out, he/she's about to join. That only happens when you stay in touch with all what happens with the company, the business stuff. I don't see people caring about such things. Ultimately you need to dissolve in the work culture of that organization later, and if you have enough information earlier that would only help you in climbing up the corporate ladder fast.
Meanwhile, the TCS' Q1 results were pretty decent, though still under expectations of the business community and the market people. The total income grows by 6.25% Q-on-Q, the net profits are up by 33.66%. TCS also has bagged another $100m deal from a US-based financial firm. Strategic partnership with China and the Joint Venture with Microsoft are other highlights for this Quarter. The revenues for this Quarter are Rs. 2721 crore up by 24.56% Y-on-Y and up by 6.25% Q-on-Q. There was a net addition of 2,690 employees in Q1. It added 69 new clients in this Quarter. The other big wins include - a leading Europe's bio-tech firm selected TCS for structure-based optimization solutions for drug discovery, and another Fortune 500 manufacturing company selected TCS' BPO for providing F&A services. The list is endless, no doubt it is India's largest software firm, and the top exporter. The Q1 results are somehow just better than Infy's.
Other big news today was the merger between Tata Infotech and TCS. Tata Infotech will soon be a part of TCS. The merger will provide TCS an expanded customer base and a deeper penetration in key geographies, and these customers will have access to the wider range of services offered by TCS, they say. Though the TCS stock fell down in last 2 days, such results are a sign of something good, that's yet to come.
I don't know where I'll be after a year. The life's unpredictable nature again comes into play. But wish you luck TCS! May you accomplish the vision of being in Global Top 10 in the coming years.
Wish you all the very best for the future TCS!

hey i loved your attitude about your company...its a pleasure seeing an employee so much in love with his company...oh yeah its absolutely fine to fire non performers...even i will do the same!!he he!*satanic smile*
vaise bhi its like...a company is bothered about his results and growth...if some factors are not contributing but adding to the liabilities..one is justified to chuck them out...and hey now you are actually talking like an enterpreneur..guess you are doing your best to be prepared for CAt...
all the best for CAT... but make sure u dont post things on ur blog.. which is confidential :)
@Shikha:
*Satanic smile* hehe!
@Art:
No, that information isn't confidential. Its the information that TCS itself posted on its website, and reading the documents there I summarized it it my blog. And I'm still to join TCS.. 'm in final year now.
good luck!
and i love your word of the day...what is that? cacophony where the word sounds like its definition? sylph sounds like what it is. cool word.
@avik: Thanks :)
@Anisa:
Its the 'Word of the Day' :D
This way I learn a new word, burn it into my mind everytime I post. And when I have no idea to post on, I simply have the Word of the Day! ..productive usage of the posts :)
Hi
Good luck man...
anyway nice to see people who are commited to their work and company rather than some who come to work thinking of cofee breaks...
anyway i thought i posted the looongest post, i think u have beaten me...
just kidding man,
nice one..keep writing
Prakash
hey
do ur best for CAT n then think about anythng else...TCS is a gud company..no doubts...liked ur blog..n the word sylph...i saw a sylph in lovely red gown moving down the road...i opened my eyes..it was me..:):)
keep writing..:)
TCS hasn't fired anybody ...this is bullshit...People are leaving TCS as it pays very less. Probably u will do the same after a year.
And the 50% junta in TCS is non-performers. The appraisal system itself is "personal relationship" evolution system! What they are telling in press is just because of TCS going public!
But one thing is sure...better to start ur carier with TCS ...it gives u lotz of good and bad experience...!
Ek TCSer.
Thanks Prakash, sona, ahaan, and avik - you have a great blog.
Anonymous, thanks for posting the ideas, I know about the less pay but I also know people who're having a good time there. Anyways, I'm there for a good start, I'm not destined to code I know.. I'll switch to management asap. It would have been better if you just would have mentioned your name :)
Thanks for your comment on my blog. Appreciate it.
I work with Google. Can totally empathize with your fondness for TCS.
Hey good luck for your CAT results!
